Differences Between Equity and Equality in the Workplace

Table of contents

The confusion between the terms equality and equity is already a mistake of the past. In recent years, we have made significant progress in understanding the differences between these two concepts. But when applied to the workplace, interesting questions arise. Why is equality so important in the workplace? What do equality and equity have in common? Are there social groups that still need more attention?

In this new article from our Lexington Magazine, we will explore these ideas. I assure you that we will clear up all your doubts!

    What is equality?

Equality means treating everyone the same, meaning that all people have the same opportunities and resources. This implies that we are equal in rights and opportunities.

    What is equity?

Equity, on the other hand, means that those opportunities and resources are not the same but are adjusted to the specific circumstances or needs of each individual, aiming for an equal outcome.

Common points between equality and equity

Now you might be wondering... What do these two terms have in common, and why do people confuse them so often? The reality is that both equality and equity share a fundamental goal: to remove barriers and obstacles that prevent people's progress and well-being. Both concepts aim to create an environment where every individual has the opportunity to develop fully, regardless of their circumstances or personal characteristics.

Main differences between equity and equality

Many well-known personalities have reflected on the differences between equality and equity, but personally, we prefer Susan K. Gardner's view, which could not simplify it better:

"Equality is giving everyone a shoe. Equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits."

This quote clearly and concisely illustrates the fundamental distinction between the two concepts. While equality seeks to treat everyone the same, equity recognizes individual differences and provides resources and opportunities according to each person's specific needs.

    Equity in the workplace

Equity in the workplace refers to the implementation of practices and policies that ensure fairness and impartiality for all employees, regardless of their gender, age, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or other personal characteristics. In a nutshell, in an equitable workplace, employees should have equal opportunities for professional growth, access to resources and benefits, and be treated with respect and dignity.

What is done in an equitable workplace?

🎯 Recognizing and valuing the diversity of talents
🙋🏻‍♀️ Respecting the experiences and perspectives of each individual
📐 Taking measures to eliminate any form of discrimination or bias
🤝🏼 Implementing fair and transparent hiring policies
👨🏻‍🏫 Offering accessible professional development programs for all
    ✔️ Conducting objective performance evaluations
    ⚖️ Establishing equitable compensation systems

Furthermore, equity in the workplace involves fostering an inclusive environment where all employees feel safe to express their opinions, contribute their ideas, and fully participate in the organizational culture. And you know what? Thanks to this, companies can improve employee morale and satisfaction, increase talent retention, and enhance their reputation as employers committed to diversity and inclusion.

Promoting equity and equality in Human Resources

    Action planning

For the Human Resources department of any company, it is crucial to develop a detailed plan that includes specific actions to promote equity and equality in the workplace. Some ideas include:

    • Reviewing existing policies
    • Designing training and awareness programs for employees and managers
    • Assessing the organizational culture
    • Setting clear goals
    • Creating diversity and inclusion committees
    • Organizing team-building activities that foster inclusion

    Necessary resources

To implement the planned actions, it is important to identify and allocate the necessary resources, both human and financial. This could involve hiring personnel specialized in diversity and inclusion, investing in technology and tracking tools, and allocating specific budgets for development and awareness programs.

    Equality and equal opportunity policies

Equality and equal opportunity policies must establish clear and transparent standards to ensure that all employees have access to the same opportunities for growth and development, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or other personal characteristics.

At Lexington, we are committed to promoting equality and equity among all our members. To achieve this, we implement the following policies:

    • Inclusive hiring policy: We do not discriminate based on gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or other characteristics protected by law.
    • Merit-based promotion policy: All promotion opportunities are granted based on performance and merit, regardless of gender or other personal characteristics.
    • Training and development programs: We offer accessible professional training and development programs for all our employees.
    • Culture of inclusion and respect: We do not tolerate any form of discrimination, harassment, or inappropriate behavior and will take firm action to address any violation of this policy.

Social groups that need focus from a labor perspective

Social equity sadly does not yet exist. That is why it is essential to focus on social sectors that still face greater barriers to entering the workforce or obtaining equal opportunities:

    Women

The role of women in the workforce needs to be promoted. The reasons are many: the gender pay gap, lack of representation in leadership roles, and unequal opportunities, among others. ➡️ Companies can implement specific policies to promote equal pay and the inclusion of women at all organizational levels.

    Migrants

Migrants face barriers entering the job market, such as difficulties accessing suitable jobs and discrimination based on their ethnicity or nationality. ➡️ Companies can implement inclusion policies and cultural integration programs to support migrants' adaptation and success in the workplace.

    Racialized individuals

It is crucial to focus on racialized individuals to address discrimination and promote diversity in the workplace. ➡️ Companies can implement anti-discrimination policies and cultural training programs to create an inclusive and equitable work environment for all people, regardless of their racial or ethnic background.

Are you looking for an equitable workplace where everyone feels welcome? Are you a business committed to inclusion and equality?
